Review: The App Layer — OctoApp & Mobileraker

Part of the A3DP remote-monitoring series. Store data checked 2026-10-23.

One-liner: The two best Klipper phone apps aren't monitoring services — they're the clients that make whatever service you picked actually pleasant to use.

These aren't competitors to Obico/OctoEverywhere — they're the mobile layer on top. Both connect direct to Moonraker/OctoPrint on your LAN, and both gain remote access through OctoEverywhere's tunnel (both are official OctoEverywhere partner apps). If you run a tunnel service, the app choice decides your daily experience.

OctoApp (by crysxd / Livingroom Workbench)

Platforms Android, iOS, Wear OS
Google Play 4.9★, 11.6K reviews, 100K+ downloads (checked 2026-10-23)
Klipper + OctoPrint ✅ both, first-class
Pricing Free core; in-app purchases (supporter tier) — exact pricing UNVERIFIED
Open source Plugin is open (crysxd/OctoApp-Plugin, pushed 2026-09-13); app itself closed
Remote access Direct on LAN; via OctoEverywhere tunnel remotely

Strengths: the highest-rated app in the entire category (4.9 across 11.6K reviews is remarkable), polished job-control UI, print-queue handling, Wear OS complications for glanceable progress. Weaknesses: monetization is in-app and not publicly documented — we could not verify current pricing (flagged).

Mobileraker (by Clon1998 / P Schmidt)

Platforms Android, iOS
Google Play 4.7★, 2.49K reviews, 50K+ downloads, contains ads (checked 2026-10-23)
Klipper-first ✅ (Moonraker-native; OctoPrint not supported)
Pricing Free (ads); Pro tier exists — pricing UNVERIFIED (private mobileraker_pro_pub repo)
Open source App (657★, pushed 2026-10-03) + companion daemon (279★, pushed 2026-06-15) both open
Remote access Direct on LAN; via OctoEverywhere tunnel remotely; companion adds FCM push notifications

Strengths: the most Klipper-native phone experience, fully open-source client + companion, g-code preview with live tracking, and the companion daemon gives you real push notifications without any cloud service of its own. Weaknesses: ads on free tier, smaller review base, Pro pricing not published anywhere we could verify.

How they fit the series

  • Home-only printing: either app in direct-LAN mode + Moonraker notifiers = $0, complete.
  • Remote printing: whichever tunnel service you chose (OctoEverywhere recommended) lights up the remote mode of both apps.
  • Farm: neither is a farm dashboard — that's SimplyPrint territory.

Verdict

Keep both installed; they're free. If forced to pick one for a Klipper user: Mobileraker for the open-source purist, OctoApp for the polish. With OctoEverywhere's tunnel behind either, you have the best phone experience in 3D printing today.
